Abstract : The dynamics of a coastal current flowing on the eastern shelf of Sicily are investigated by means of hydrological data and satellite-derived imagery. Strong tidal mixing occurring near the sill of the Strait of Messina genera tes a water mass whose hydrological characteristics are intertnediate between Levantine and Atlantic waters. This water mass flows southward along the Sicilian coast as far as lOO km from the sill and as far offshore as 10 km. It therefore affects a major part of the eastern coast of Sicily. Furthermore, this current can become unstable and display meanders and studies.
