Numerical simulation of the friction stir welding process using both Lagrangian and Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulations

Résumé

The plunge and dwell phase of the friction stir welding (FSW) process is simulated using two different commercial finite element codes. FORGE3(R), employing an updated Lagrangian approach with remeshing, is used to simulate the non-steady state process of plunging the tool into the workpiece, while THERCAST(R) uses an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation to simulate the stationary dwell phase. Temperatures predicted by the model are compared to an experiment on AA 7075, with favorable results.
