The aim of this introductory chapter is to present polymer surfaces or interfaces and their properties, in a pluridisciplinary approach combining chemistry, physico-chemistry, materials science, mechanics, etc. The emphasis is put on optical and mainly on mechanical and tribological properties, which are only little considered in the other chapters. Surface treatments are introduced in the conclusion.
