Hydrogen storage in carbon nanomaterials

Abstract : This paper presents the results of a French project related to hydrogen storage in carbon nanomaterials. This 3 years project, co-funded by the ADEME (French Agency for the Environment and the Energy Management), aimed to assess the hydrogen storage capacity of carbon nanomaterials. Four different carbon materials were synthesized and characterized in the frame of present project: - Carbon Nanotubes; - Carbon Nanofibres; - Carbon Aerogel; - Carbon Black. All materials tested in the frame of this project present a hydrogen uptake of less than 1 wt% (-20°C to 20°C). A state of the art of hydrogen storage systems has been done in order to determine the research trends and the maturity of the different technologies. The choice and design of hydrogen storage systems regarding fuel cell specifications has also been studied.
