EU Progress towards more efficient air-to-air air heat pumps and air conditioners

The largest heat pump market in Europe is that of reversible air conditioners, with more than 3 million units sold in Europe each year. Air-to-air heat pump performances may vary from EER2.2 and COP 2.4 to EER 5.7 and COP 5.6 under standardized conditions. This wide spread presents a high energy effi ciency potential, but with reservation for some uncertainty on fi nal energy consumption gains given the high penetration of variable-speed drive compressors and the present use of a full-load rating standard for inverters. However, with their high energy-saving potential and growing market fi gures, reversible air conditioners were studied within the framework of the Energy Using Product directive.
