De l'ingénierie de la raison à la raison pratique : pour une nouvelle approche de la sécurité

Abstract : All the contemporary approaches of safety management, despite their belonging to distinct disciplinary fields, shed a similar light on the flexibility/ridigity tension which underlies all organizational safety management systems. The tension rises from the contradiction between the uncertainty characteristic of complex systems and the willingness of organizations to control their environment. At the very heart of this tension lie human beings, a "factor" of both error and reliability, liable to either degrade or save a situation. It is therefore on human individual and collective behaviors that most of the effort to understand and manage safety issues is focused. The present communication proposes an analysis of contemporary safety approaches as stemming from one identical root, the engineering ideology. We demonstrate that preserving safety may be achieved using an alternative perspective, which would not be anchored in engineering, namely ethics. We build our demonstration on data gathered in the field, through non-participant observation of the activities of a gas distribution company.
