Impact of aromatic compounds on acid gas injection: experimental measurement and predictions with the GC-PR-CPA equation of state

Abstract : A challenge for petroleum companies is the exploitation of hydrocarbon reservoirs containing high concentrations of acid gases (CO2 and H2S). Acid gases are undesirable and they are stripped from the hydrocarbon stream. Then, they can be re-injected into the reservoir to enhance gas recovery. However some hydrocarbons (e.g. methane and ethane) and aromatic compounds (e.g. benzene and toluene) may remain in the acid gases stream, becoming undesirable impurities leading to operation issues. A bibliographic study reveals that existing data are limited especially for multi-component systems containing acid gases. Experimental measurements have been conducted for different mixtures. The model already developed, called GC-PR-CPA [1] is used in this work to predict the different phase equilibria of systems with acid gases. The results reveal that our model is in good agreement with experimental data.
