Maintenance et attention à la fragilité

Abstract : This article examines the attention to fragility at play in two urban maintenance settings: graffiti removal and water networks management. It shows that maintenance activities consist of situated sensory explorations by which agents become attentive to the state of things and deal with their tendency to alter and transform. Both routinized and open to surprises, this attention is deployed throughout a material ecology where the action and reaction of the substances at play, of the tools the maintainers handle, and of their own bodies are taken into consideration and constantly adjusted. Always political, economic and material, the attention to fragility at work in maintenance situations shapes specific ways of taking care of things which, far from fixing their state once and for all, inextricably participates in their becoming.
