Musicothérapie en milieu carcéral

Abstract : Interest of Music-therapy for incarcerated male adolescents Introduction: The analysis of literature finds only one study on the interest of music-therapy in prison [1]. Since 1998, the Prison of Villeneuve les Maguelone has introduced music-therapy into the multidisciplinary cares of incarcerated minors [2]. Objective: To develop an educational and preventive action through music-therapy aiming at social rehabilitation of minors in prison. Method: The music-therapy room is equipped with audio material, musical instruments and a computer. The sessions are organized on a regular basis and supervised by a music-therapist. The prisoners can create models, individually or in a group, for wich they compose the music, sing and write texts on various instrumentations, using instruments and their voices. In the school centre, they also take part in the data-processing workshop, to create the graphics of their plastic cover and to write and correct the texts. The latter are published in the internal newspaper, available in the library and may be reviewed by the psychologists. Results/Discussion: Our experiment relates to 60 young people who are followed during a period extending from 2 months to 2 years. Music-therapy makes it possible to the young prisoners to attend again the school and educational places, unconstrained and in agreement with adults. This collaboration between participants, about music, allows the young prisoner to value himself by concretizing his work through the realization of a CD. In 2003, the imprisoned teenagers carried out the realization of a CD. This CD shows that music-therapy makes it possible for youg people to live their imprisonment, as a priority, in an educational and teaching perspective and not only in a repressive way. Moreover, it has a preventive action on young delinquents who live outside and listen to it. Finally, this method allows certain minor prisoners to continue a musical or cultural activity after leaving the prison. Conclusion: Thus, music-therapy is an important element making it possible to resort to the resocialization of young prisoners, in particular through steps of educational reintegration. The realization of CD shows that the prison can establish a link with the outside and in parallel modify the behaviour of young people going through great socio-emotional difficulties.
