The objective of the “Physics of Plasticity and Metal” (PPM) group of CEMES is to understand the mechanical properties of materials, primarily metallic ones. The research is based on the study and modeling of the basic mechanisms of plasticity (dislocations behavior, phase transformations, diffusive processes, etc.) related in particular with the aging of these materials, and the development of elaboration processes, especially Spark Plasma Sintering.
The purpose of this work is to translate this knowledge to the optimization of structural and mechanical properties of complex industrial materials, such as those of the aeronautic industry.
The favored tool is the Transmission Electron Microscope, using all advanced observation techniques, and with the originality of the expertise of the in-situ observation of the behavior of materials submitted to temperature and stress, at microscopic or nanoscopic scales.
